Long Strip- and panel roofing
At the end of the 19th century, galvanized sheet steel was often used as roofing material and then painted in situ. Today, pre-painted sheet steel is used almost exclusively, where SSAB is a leading supplier with its product Prelaq.
In principle, any building can be roofed with sheet steel, which makes it an obvious choice not only for many property owners, but also for architects, who appreciate the high level of flexibility that makes the material easy to combine with other building materials while offering unlimited possibilities to create bold roof designs.
Today, long strip roofing is the dominant approach to sheet steel roofing. The normal distance between the seams of the sheet metal is 600 mm, which means a panel width of 670 mm.
There are many reasons for recommending sheet steel as a roofing material. It can be used for industrial-, commercial, or residential applications where factors such as appearance, fire safety, mechanical resistance and long lifetime are important determining factors, and where prepainted sheet makes an obvious alternative.
Prepainted steel is also 100% recyclable, which means that the sheet steel is an environmentally friendly choice.
Long strip roofing is also suitable for the renovation of roofs and can be combined with extra thermal insulation.
In cases where the desire is to bring out the steel roofing even more and tie into an old roofing tradition, paneled roofing is an option. It not only creates a pattern on the roof, but also delivers a stiffening function, which can be beneficial in locations with high wind exposure. For steep roofs with an angle of incline exceeding 14 degrees, paneled roofing can be used not only for visual purposes, but also because the panels are easier to handle and can be seamed together in situ.
Paneled roofing means working from a panel format and joining the plates with standing seams and cross-seams. Today paneled roofing is used most frequently on buildings where the aim is to accentuate appearance and quality while also referencing older, traditional roofing styles.
